Movie Synopsis

Although now divorced, Glenda Markle cannot bring herself to leave her former husband, Tex Warner, even though she is far too smart and career minded to waste her precious time on him. Tex is a struggling band leader who, had it not been for his practically non- existent will power, would have hit the jackpot long ago with one of his records, even though he was always dreaming of making a comeback.

One day, when Tex and his band, the Red River Ramblers, are taking part in a political rally in a small south-western town, which is being held to try and stir up votes for the local candidate Glenda spots a good-looking young man who certainly has got a feel for the beat. Later she discovers that he can sing and play the guitar and so she cajoles this boy, Deke Rivers, into going on to the stage to give a solo performance. The result proves to her all that she needs to know. The crowd are spellbound and it is clearly evident that this boy is more than just an ordinary "guitar slinger" but a boy who, with the talent he possesses and good publicity, can go right to the top.

For some reason Glenda is still anxious to do all she can for Tex and so, by using Deke to publicise his name, they tour the country doing shows together. To begin with Tex is the star and Elvis is just a member of the supporting cast but as time passes and the crowds cheer more and more for Deke and less and less for Tex it seems only right that Deke should get equal billing with Tex.

Deke is very happy but surprised about his success. He lays his success down to Glenda and Tex and values their friendship far more than the benefits of show-business. Although he admires Glenda he performance. The result proves to her all that she needs to know. The crowd are spellbound and it is clearly evident that this boy is more than just an ordinary "guitar slinger" but a boy who, with the talent he possesses and good publicity, can go right to the top.

One night Deke is insulted by a boy in a cafe and a fight evolves. Consequently Deke is arrested but is released in time for the show. Glenda is quick to seize this incident to use as publicity but Deke is very worried about the effect it is having on the audience and the controversy it is causing in the top spots of the town.

When Deke gets the chance he goes home with Susan to meet her parents who live on a farm and these prove to be a few of the happiest days of his life. He intends staying longer with them but Glenda soon arrives to drag him back to his engagements.

In the city of Freegate, in Texas, the show is forbidden by the Mayor after the mothers of the teenagers living there have demonstrated against the harmful influence Deke is having on them. Deke is disillusioned and decides to give up his singing and leave the band altogether to take up an ordinary job as an ordinary citizen. Glenda refuses to let him and persuades him to stay by making him believe that she is in love with him.

Deke is due to appear on a telecast which is nationwide and is the story of his life, but just before it is due to begin Deke learns that Glenda was once married to Tex and it is as though the bottom has fallen out of his world. Glenda was his idol and she had let him down. Deke escapes, just before the show is about to be transmitted and drives away. The show has to commence and Susan has to explain to the viewers that the reason Deke is not appearing is because he is afraid his act may cause some dissension. But just as she is explaining all this Deke appears on the stage singing the simple, but effective. Loving You. The audience is captivated and he continues the rest of his act with their full support.

Deke then gets a contract thrust at him by a prominent T.V. Executive but he is far more interested in Susan than any contract and in the background, just to round off the happy story Glenda and Tex are all set for a reconciliation.
